What is gum disease?

If you were building a house, you’d want excellent foundations below ground to ensure the structure above stayed strong for many years to come. The same goes for your smile.

Your gums are the foundation, working hard to protect the roots of your teeth, keeping your visible smile beautiful for everyone to see.
How do your gums protect your teeth? By creating a seal at the base of each tooth that prevents bacteria from reaching the jawbone below. However, if plaque is allowed to build up around the gums it can cause inflammation, called gum disease. This can then cause the gum to pull away from the teeth creating a pocket, and therefore that lovely seal is no longer intact. These pockets are perfect places for more plaque and bacteria to hide, and this is when gum disease becomes periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
The first signs of gum disease are bleeding when you brush or floss, red, swollen or tender gums, bad breath or a bad taste. It is also worth looking at your teeth for signs of plaque build-up, especially around the spots that are harder to brush.
Gum disease also has proven links with numerous other conditions, including stroke, heart disease and diabetes so it is in the interest of your overall health to keep your gums in top condition!

Can gum disease be cured?

Early gum disease can be treated and cured, usually with a scale and polish by your hygienist followed by a more rigorous and targeted home care regime.

Unfortunately, periodontal disease, or periodontitis, cannot be cured. Once diagnosed, it can be controlled and managed appropriately. This is where the expertise of our specialist periodontist comes in. They will create a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs, aimed at effectively managing your periodontitis.

This will involve specialist cleaning of your teeth and gums. Periodontal appointments are usually longer than a regular hygiene appointment as they involve more extensive treatment. You will also be given expert advice that will help you to care for your teeth and gums every day in between your appointments.

Your treatment plan will include follow up appointments with the periodontist who will continue to assess your teeth and gums, and carry out therapy as required. In this way, we can manage periodontitis, helping you to keep your teeth for life.
